An enthusiastic crowd showed up at McAdam Park over the weekend for Spring Bowl II, the official kick-off of the 2023 Women’s Flag Football season.

“It was an amazing day both weather-wise and for football,” said the Cowichan Women’s flag football league’s Chris Mann. “There were lots of exciting moments, big plays, little plays, big runs, and outstanding catches.”

Players came out from all over Cowichan as well as from Victoria and Nanaimo as well, Mann noted.

“It was a good mix of veterans and rookies, even three girls from our junior program from last year,” Mann added. “It is a very exciting time now with a new program starting in Victoria, called UA Rise, which is getting junior girls involved in football and also co-ed flag football for the older groups.”

As for the Cowichan Valley, the CWFL season’s first games run on April 2 at McAdam Park with two games starting at 10 a.m.

This year the league is comprised of six teams: the Storm, the Ravens, the Crew, the Wild, the Ruckers and the Law.

Some of the teams are still looking to fill out their rosters so interested women can head down to Rotary Park Monday and Wednesday nights at 7 p.m.

“Bring your cleats and try the game,” Mann said.
