Shawnigan Lake School hosts rugby’s Stadium Series

Games will help rank high school teams going into provincial championships

Shawnigan Lake School played host earlier this month to one of the premier events in B.C. high school rugby ahead of the provincial championships.

The Stadium Series returned to Shawnigan on May 6 for the first time since 2019. All high school rugby was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Introduced in 2016, the Stadium Series is a precursor to the provincial championships, matching up schools from different zones to help rank teams more accurately. Nearly 1,000 players, coaches and spectators gathered at the school for the Friday afternoon games, the Shawnigan players and their supporters pumped up after a prep rally.

Shawnigan’s senior girls XV opened the day with a 52-10 win over Surrey’s École Salish Secondary School 52-10, securing an extra berth at provincials for the Island region.

Four of the games featured host Shawnigan taking on St. George’s School. The Shawnigan colt (U16) A and B teams both lost to St. George’s, but Shawnigan’s U18 teams both won, the 2nd XV by more than 50 points and the 1st XV by a final score of 26-10. Shawnigan beat St. George’s in the last AAAA boys final in 2019.

Brentwood College School also defeated Langley Secondary in an AA boys matchup at the Stadium Series.

The provincial championships are set to take place in Abbotsford on June 1-4.
