Pair of setbacks for junior B Isles

After back-to-back wins gave the Kerry Park Islanders a little momentum in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, the club suffered a pair of setbacks on the weekend.

The Isles lost 4-1 to the Victoria Cougars at Archie Browning Arena on Friday and 6-1 to the Nanaimo Buccaneers at Kerry Park Arena on Saturday.

On Friday, the Isles trailed 2-0 after the first period before Parker Bergstrom scored on the powerplay — his team-leading sixth goal of the season — midway through the third. Evan Easton, who led the VIJHL in points as an Islander last season, answered back for the Cougars just over a minute later, also on the powerplay to restore the two-goal margin, and Duncan product Cam LeSergent added another goal into an empty net.

Kerry Park goalie Spencer Deakin stopped 32 of 36 shots, while the Isles put 24 shots on the Victoria goal.

Back at home on Saturday, the Isles were down 4-0 after 20 minutes and 5-0 after the Bucs scored a powerplay goal at 8:07 of the third period. Defenceman Matt Baird scored his first of the season 39 seconds after that, and Nanaimo added one more before the final buzzer.

Deakin was back between the pipes for Kerry Park, and made 37 saves as his team was outshot 43-25.

With a season record two wins and 11 losses after the weekend games, the Isles played host to the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Tuesday. Comox went into the game with the worst record in the league, their only point in 14 games coming from an overtime loss.

On the weekend, the Isles will be at home to the Cougars on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Saanich Braves on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both of Kerry Park’s wins this season have come against Saanich, one on the road and one at home.
