The Friendship Cup, the annual high school field hockey tournament co-hosted by Shawnigan Lake and Brentwood College schools, was held this past weekend with both junior and senior girls’ game action beginning Friday morning on Shawnigan Lake School’s campus.

“It was a great tournament, the biggest yet,” said Shawnigan coach Andi Conroy, who called it a “brilliant festival of hockey”.

Shawnigan Lake School, Brentwood College, Cowichan Secondary, and Queen Margaret’s School teams all took part, with games contested in each of the Premier, Development, and Competitive divisions.

The Premier division featured Cowichan Secondary, Shawnigan Lake School’s senior team, Crofton House School and Little Flower Academy of Vancouver, and Collingwood School of West Vancouver, as well as Greater Victoria’s Oak Bay Secondary and St. Michaels University School and a team from Kelowna.

When all was said and done, St. Michaels University ended up first and Oak Bay was second in the Premier division.

A building year for Shawnigan, the young team came seventh, and won in a shootout in their last game, “which was brilliant for morale and spirit,” said Conroy.

The Competitive division featured South Delta Secondary School, Cowichan Secondary’s second XI, Brentwood College School’s first XI, and all the way from Burlington, Ont., MM Robinson High School.

Brentwood took top spot in that division.

The Development division consisted of Brentwood College School’s second XI, Shawnigan Lake’s junior team, QMS, and Victoria-area schools Lambrick Park, and Glenlyon Norfolk School.

Brentwood was third in the development division.
