With the U21 BC Curling Championships successfully completed, the Duncan Curling Club members are turning their attention to their first adult bonspiel in three years (thanks to the pandemic and the ice plant failure).

The Gems & Gents parallel bonspiel runs Feb. 16-19 and will feature 34 teams from up and down the Island.

What is a parallel spiel?

“It’s an event that holds a women’s event and a men’s event all in the same bonspiel,” explained the club’s Susanne Grundison. “It’s very complicated for the draw masters, John Elzinga and Brent Dellabuur, but they are seasoned veterans.”

Grundison said the theme of the event is “Honky Tonk Country”, with many surprises all weekend for the curlers. Play begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 with first draw. Play will continue on Friday night and all day Saturday until the Texas BBQ banquet in the evening, and a cornhole tournament to follow.

Sunday will feature quarter-, semi- and finals games.

“The public is more than welcome to come down to the Duncan Curling Club to watch the curling games all weekend,” Grundison said.
