Duncan Christian School’s senior boys basketball team returned from the Christmas break with a solid showing in the B.C. Christian Schools tournament in Surrey on Jan. 9-11.
The Chargers won their second and third games by large margins, and lost their first and fourth games — against the fourth- and third-ranked teams in the province — to finish tied for ninth place out of 19 entries. The losses were learning experiences, said head coach Jim Brandsma.
“We had some shining moments from all players and some pretty tough moments too,” he elaborated. “In our last game of the tournament, we probably had our best second half defensive effort to date. Unfortunately our first half fell very flat and it ended in a loss.”
Last weekend, the Chargers travelled to Gulf Islands Secondary for the Nairn Howe tournament. They lost their opening game against the host Scorpions, then defeated the GISS B team before falling to Alberni District in their last match. Cam Stevens, Elias Floucault and Nathan Powell received Player of the Game awards.
The DCS senior girls basketball team split their first two league games after the break, losing to Nanaimo Christian 52-46 on Jan. 7, and beating John Barsby 48-37 on Jan. 9. Against NCS, Mollie Corbett had 11 points, Candice Bennett had nine points, Grace George had eight points and 20 rebounds, and Kristine Williams had eight points and 15 rebounds. Against Barsby, George put up 23 points and 12 rebounds, Williams had nine points and 13 rebounds, and Julianna Kapteyn had nine points.
The Chargers also played in Brentwood College School’s senior girls tournament on Jan. 10 and 11, losing all three games. Player of the Game awards went to Morgan Nederlof, Kapteyn and Williams.
