Cowichan soccer players named to VISL and LIWSA all-star teams

Island masters all-stars include six 49ers

Cowichan soccer will be well represented on the Vancouver Island Soccer League all-star teams that will travel to Port Moody next weekend to take on Fraser Valley Soccer League all-star squads.

The VISL masters all-star team, in particular, will be loaded with talent from the Cowichan 49ers, who boast a perfect record through the first 12 games of the season. Stu Barker, whose 24 goals are by far the most in the masters league, leads a delegation that includes Adam Taft, Neall Rowlings, George Thomas, Todd Vass and goalie Rob McIntyre. UVic’s Moreno Stefani will coach the team, with Cowichan’s Kevin James serving as manager.

Steve Scott will be the lone Cowichan player on the VISL open all-star team coached by Bays’ Richard Fast. Bays’ Paddy Nelson is one of several former Cowichan players on the roster as well.

The all-star teams will meet in Port Moody on Jan. 12, with the masters teams squaring off at 1 p.m. and the open teams playing at 3 p.m.

Div. 2 player Kristina Biello will be Cowichan’s lone representative on a Lower Island Women’s Soccer Association all-star team when she takes the field for the Div. 2/3 squad at Victoria’s Braefoot Park this Sunday. The premier/Div. 1 game goes at 10 a.m., followed by the Div. 2/3 match at noon and the over 30A/B game at 2 p.m.
