Thank you for coming out for cross placements
The first and biggest of the Cowichan Valley’s traditional veterans’ Remembrance cross placements was completed at the Somenos cemeteries — Mountain View and St. Mary’s — on Sunday afternoon [Oct. 24], and I want to offer a big thank you to all of the volunteers who turned out on short notice and in the face of a historic “weather bomb” storm to complete the task! As I’d predicted, we got a nice two-hour break in the steady downpour — too bad it was right after we’d finished the job!
Everyone got soaked to the skin and our lists and maps were reduced to soggy pulp, but the volunteer crew persisted and covered the 485 veterans’ burials at both sites in only a couple of hours. The organizers were impressed once again at how the Cowichan community can be relied on to come out and support this commemoration, if the cadets who ordinarily do it are unable to participate, and we learned a lot about how to make the event run more smoothly if such circumstances ever arise again. Thanks again, everyone!
