Last week both the Cowichan Valley Citizen and Victoria Times Colonist blasted out the same inaccurate headlines regarding the playground fire in Duncan’s Centennial Park.
The day after the fire I saw that the playground had not burned down. Yes, there was the burned skeleton of what had been a well-used, fun climbing feature, but it made up only a part of the playground. The swings and the rocking toys were unscathed, the sand was still there for play, the water park still in operation, the trees and grass unaffected by fire and most importantly children were playing in the playground.
The sky did not fall, Chicken Little. Children still have a place to play, to picnic and run in the grass. Aside from the loss of the climbing feature (hopefully it can be replaced soon) the more serious loss is once again, our trust in and the integrity of our local news reporting.
