Insensitive to put grad photo on the front page with news stories

My comment is in response to seeing Friday, June 28’s cover page. I found it insensitive to have a photo of graduating teenagers cheering in between two articles about a missing community member and a tragic fatal accident.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled at seeing a photo of grads celebrate the completion of their high school years, but the decision to put this image at the centre of the page in between two disconcerting stories was thoughtless.

It is a terrible tragedy that Pamela, the mother of Wilder World, the toddler who was killed, will not to get see her little boy grow up and graduate from high school. I think that it’s important to remember that the family, the friends and the neighbours of the missing woman and deceased child are likely reading the Citizen and deserve better.

An option could have been to have the newspaper cover page feature Cowichan Valley graduates’ grad celebrations and other youth events happening in the Valley, such as the youth volunteer programs and camps happening at the Cowichan Bay Estuary, and Adagé’s This is Us performance evenings. My wish is for our community to be informed in a way that is not desensitized.
