Walter Erickson

April 29, 2007

Walter had just celebrated his 87th birthday as he was born on April 19, 1920, in Sorsel, Sweden. On the morning of Sunday, April 29th he passed away very peacefully, at home, after giving his “very best” in a fight with cancer. He will be sadly missed by his family, including his loving wife and best friend of 60 years Wilma; his daughter Karen; and two grandchildren Larissa and Harlan. He was predeceased by his son Ron; and three brothers Eric, Fred, and Sigvard. Walter and his family moved from Sweden to Northern Alberta when he was 6 years old, and at the age of 19 he ventured out west and started logging on the coast and the interior of BC where he met Wilma at a dance in her hometown of Salmon Arm. After their marriage, they started out in Saltair, then settled in Rosedale, BC and moved to Lake Cowichan in 1966. He retired as a faller at the age of 60, moved to Duncan, and enjoyed traveling with Wilma, often in their camper with the boat in tow. As an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting, was a very active member of the Valley Fish & Game Club, and was later endorsed as a lifetime member. During his years with the Club he gained much respect, many good friends and was affectionately referred to as “Pa”. Along with being a dedicated husband, Dad, Grandpa, bread winner, and community member he could build, fix or grow just about anything. Their home, and his daughters’, contain many pieces of furniture skillfully produced by Walter. Side by side with Wilma he also enjoyed making bread, canning and cooking. He was an admirable man, possessing a strong work ethic, a sense of invention and determination, who took pride in his work and retained his sense of humour to the end. The family would like to thank Dr. Roy, and the Cowichan Home Support workers and Home care nurses for their invaluable care. Without all of you, we would not have been able to keep Walter at home with us during the past months, which is something he also appreciated very much. All family, friends, and fans are invited to a celebration of Walter’s Life on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at Sands Funeral Chapel, 187 Trunk Road, Duncan. In lieu of flowers, donation may be forwarded to the Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division, 565 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4J4.
