April 21, 1921 - December 4, 2008
Irma passed away peacefully at home with her daughter by her side on Thursday December 4, 2008. She was born and raised in Augsburg, Germany. She married Benedikt Schmidt in 1944, who was called to war duty right after their honeymoon and went missing in action. Many years later she fell in love again and married Heinz Meschkat in 1952. Being in the diplomatic service she then travelled widely with her family and lived in Spain, South America, Germany, Washington, DC, Montreal, and France until Irma and Heinz retired in Vancouver, BC. She came to live in Lake Cowichan to be near her family in 1996. She was predeceased by her husband Heinz (1981). Tragically her son Gunther Meschkat passed away suddenly on Sunday December 7, 2008. Irma is lovingly remembered by her family: daughter Monika Krause, son in law Robert Krause, daughter-in-law Ruby Meschkat; grandchildren Melissa (Ken) Wuestenfeld, Jennifer Krause, Steven (Lora) Meschkat, and Christina Meschkat; great grandchildren Taylor and Kaley Wuestenfeld.
Irma had a zest for life and a heart of gold. She will always be remembered as a vibrant, independent and loving woman. Her family was her world and she always was there for anyone who needed help. She had a spunky sense of humour and loved to laugh. She was full of many interesting stories of her life and travels. She shared generously everything she had to give. She always said “I want to give with warm hands.” We miss her dearly.
To be announced at a later date, a Memorial Mass will be offered at St. Louis De Montfort Roman Catholic Church, Lake Cowichan, BC. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or charity of your choice.
