It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Harjinder Kaur Doman (Helen) announces her passing on June, 3rd, 2023.
Survived by her immediate family daughters and son, Darcia, Sherry, Verinda and son Jaspaul (Rick); grandchildren; Natasha, Jeevan, Sienna, Janeece; and brothers Dave and Terry Lashman.
Helen was predeceased by her loving husband Harbanse (Herb) Singh Doman; her father Lashman Singh; her mother Maha Kaur; and her sisters Mahinder Kaur (Alice) and Harbans Kaur (Betty).
Helen will be dearly missed and forever remembered as a passionate woman who pioneered her remarkable journey with elegance and dignity. She graced this world with integrity, wisdom, kindness and compassion; along with a wonderful sense of humour.
Helen was intelligent, well read and spoke clearly on all aspects of world politics and current events, an avid reader of newspapers and watching the world news. She had a natural ability to connect to everyone she encountered. You could often find Helen reflecting and praying in solitude or in a crowd sharing her stories.
She was highly intuitive and spiritual with a deep faith and respect for all religions. The Gurdwara Sikh Temple was Helen's place of worship. Mom was passionate about a dedicated holistic lifestyle.
Helen was born at King Daughters Hospital in Duncan, BC, she spent her early years in Paldi, B.C before moving to Duncan, B.C. in 1948 where she proudly graduated with honours at Cowichan Senior High School. She had her eyes to pursue her culinary passion at the renowned International Le Cordon Blue, instead she chose to stay close to her island family roots and set herself on being an expert culinary and pastry cook.
Helen took tremendous pride in her career as a bookkeeper at the Municipality of North Cowichan before she married in 1955. Helen's devoted her life to her loving husband and raising her four children with love and affection and taking care of her mother.
Helen actively devoted her time to community involvement as a long standing Hospital Auxiliary at the Cowichan District Hospital, a member of the Dogwood Chapter sorority and was a respected and professional member of IODE Canada.
Helen had a passion and a zest for life that touched everyone around her. She radiated with smiles, sincerity and natural charm that lit up a room. People naturally gravitated to her warmth and authenticity. Helen was a special angel who always extended a helping hand to each and every one she encountered.
Helen was the heart to the family; she was multi-faceted and uniquely gifted with immense creativity, Helen had an eye for detail in pursuing her many crafts, inventing her own recipes and creating one-of-a-kind dishes.
Helen was known for her exceptional flare in showcasing East Indian cuisine as her prized specialty. Helen was self-taught, her love for all animal's and her vast hobbies included, cooking, interior decorating, gardening, floral arrangements, antique finds, crossword puzzles and her bridge club. Helen and Herb lived an extraordinary life meeting The Aga Kahn, Princess Diana and Prince Charles christening a ship The Pondarosa in Japan and dining with Prime Ministers.
Helen enjoyed her serene surroundings of mother nature from her rural estate with breathtaking views of Genoa Bay, Saltspring Island and Active Pass. Her home overlooked acres on a tree sanctuary set amongst an abundance of unique and precious timber and evergreens.
Helen had a gift of hospitality making everyone feel welcomed and special, she had an open-door policy and loved entertaining family, friends and her husband's business associates with open arms.
Helen will be deeply and forever missed by her family. Her remarkable legacy will forever live on in our hearts.
Helen's service will be held on June 17, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the New Life Baptist Church, 1839 Tzouhalem Road, Duncan, BC followed by prayers and lunch at the Paldi Temple.
