It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Allen Gene Johnson (aka Birdman) of Ladysmith BC on June 23 at the age of 80 years.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Inez Johnson, children Valerie Lynn Oudaimy (Joseph), son Vincent James Johnson (Trish), step children Iris Schomer (Greg), Keith Ross (predeceased), Sherry Wood (Glenn), Don Ross, brothers Dave Johnson (Annette) and Kenneth Johnson (Linda), 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by mother Myrtle O'Brien and father Jimmy Johnson, siblings Jeanette Schonwald, Harold Johnson, Jerry Johnson.
He was born and raised in Kimberley BC, served 3 years in Germany for First Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry after which he travelled and lived in several areas of BC and Alberta, working as a floor layer settling in Ladysmith BC. He was fond of animals and often seen with his bird Peek-a-Boo in the Ladysmith area. Towns folk gave him the nickname Birdman. Al was a musician and played in several bands, and enjoyed jamming with family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations in Allen's name may be made to the Nanaimo or Duncan SPCA.
