Brick by brick, staff at the Lake Cowichan branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library want to build a Lego collection.
Librarian Monica Finn is hoping members of the community will search high and low through their toys to gather up some donations.
"I've been here since the summer and multiple people have come up to ask if we could have a Lego club like they do in Duncan," Finn said.
The Cowichan branch (within the Island Savings Centre) spent "several hundred dollars" on their collection and, while it's meant to be shared by neighbouring libraries, the reality is it's hard to share sometimes. The Cowichan Lego club meets every two weeks for a building session and their creations are then put on display for a time before everything gets disassembled and new visions are constructed.
It leaves little time for the blocks to go on a road trip.
"It's more difficult to share than it seems," Finn noted, adding many libraries with larger budgets can afford to buy their own Lego but for the Lake, it's just not in the allowance.
The Lake Cowichan branch is, however, receiving the Duncan-based Lego set for a spring break camp March 22 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Cowichan library for those who want to meet up and play.
"We are borrowing the Cowichan [Duncan] collection for that but if we had a permanent one that lived here than we could regularly do this," Finn said. "I wish we had a collection," she said. "This is our attempt to get one."
Folks are welcome to drop by the library to learn more about the upcoming camp or to drop off Lego donations. If the branch is closed, donations can be put through the book return slot.
