A new after-school experience for youth in Grades 1 through 7 is available at no cost to youth in the Cowichan Valley.

Based at the Cowichan Sportsplex, Playcare is a program aimed at promoting physical literacy skills through fun and exciting games and activities.

Sponsored by the Canadian Red Cross, the free program offers an after school snack at the beginning of the session, followed by fun.

“The program is modeled on PacificSport’s Nanaimo-based after school program that we have delivered over the past eight-plus years,” said PacificSport’s Kayla Liddle. “We operated in 16 different schools and saw 400 kids each week while it was in session.”

The Playcare program runs twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3 p.m. through 4:30 p.m.

“Activities will change each session to keep everyone engaged and excited,” Liddle noted. “This program is entirely free to children in our area and will be a great way for children to get active and socialize during these difficult times.”

Kids should bring running shoes, comfortable clothes, a water bottle and a rain jacket or sweatshirt as the program will run rain or shine.

Parents should note that there are COVID-19 safety precautions in place and following the rules will be mandatory. Visit the PacificSport Vancouver Island website to learn more and to register. The program runs twice a week from now until Dec. 3.
