Demolition of derelict buildings begins in Lake Cowichan

It’s taken a long time to accomplish but demolition is underway or finished at several sites

It’s taken town council a long time to accomplish the job, but finally several derelict buildings are coming down in Lake Cowichan.

Work began recently with the careful removal of asbestos from the Kasapi Centre, a building that had come into the hands of the town after standing closed for years.

The old building had served as a restaurant for a long time prior to that. Many residents will know it as The Loggers Hut while oldtimers will also remember it as The Lunch Tray.

Once that was finished, it did not take long to demolish the building itself, leaving only a pile of building blocks on the ground so the site looked for a while like a giant’s playpen.

By Oct. 10, however, a big backhoe was clearing up the last of the debris, and the hazmat and demolition crew had moved on to the next building, at 182 Neva Rd.

This little home probably contained a lot of memories for some long-ago family but in the past few years it’s been left to its own resources to the point where it had a tree growing through it. But it, too, was flattened by Thursday afternoon.

Also on the agenda for demolition are more derelict homes on Neva Road, and the Mildred Child Annex on South Shore Road next to the Lake Cowichan town hall.
