Community Garden will keep going, says leadership

The Cowichan Lake Community Garden’s membership wants to see the garden continue

The Cowichan Lake Community Garden’s membership wants to see the garden continue — now they just need to figure out where.

Following an emergency meeting of the garden on Aug. 12 to discuss the viability of its future, spokeswoman Cara Smith announced that the group will move forward with the creation of a new space.

“I believe there is enough will and enthusiasm to create a new community garden in Lake Cowichan,” she said in a statement on the group’s Facebook page this week.

However, the group still needs to find a new location.

In her message, Smith said the meeting’s attendees had narrowed down the proposed options and had made new suggestions, too.

The list of possible locations she noted included one at Stone Avenue Park, Point Ideal Park, and a third that is still awaiting approval from the Town of Lake Cowichan: the green space beside the library.

“If a decision on a new location can be reached before Aug. 18 the directors will prepare a proposal to submit to council at the Aug. 23 regular council meeting,” Smith stated.
