UPDATE: Garage lost but house saved from North Cowichan blaze

“It was a windy day, so it could have been a lot worse”

Three fire halls from North Cowichan responded to a house fire on Sumas Road around 3:20 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24.

Interim fire chief Ron French said up to 20 firefighters from Maple Bay, Crofton and South End fire halls were on scene at the blaze, which destroyed the garage of the single-family structure.

He said the garage was attached to the house by a section of roof, and there was a breezeway between the two buildings.

“The fire started in the garage and the fire crews managed to hold it there,” French said.

“The garage is a write off, but the house just had some water damage in the basement. The house is insured so the owners are working with their insurers to deal with that damage. The power was also shut off during the fire and that has to be hooked up again.”

French said the fire crews took under two hours to deal with the situation.

“It was a windy day, so it could have been a lot worse,” he said.

“Our fire crews did a great job.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
