The long-anticipated new field house at the Cowichan Sportsplex is expected to be completed this summer, and politicians and dignitaries gathered on March 15 to celebrate the much-needed facility at the recreation centre, located on Chesterfield Avenue.

When completed, the new field house will feature fully accessible public washrooms and change rooms, along with an improved facility administration area, and it will enhance the user experience for all visitors to the Sportsplex.

It will replace aging office space, which has been provided by a temporary portable building, and washrooms, as well as provide change rooms/showers for the first time.

Anne Kang, B.C.’s Minister of Municipal Affairs, said the construction of the field house is another step for a vibrant and inclusive community dedicated to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle.

“The enhancements, including fully accessible amenities and improved administrative facilities, demonstrates the power of community partnerships in North Cowichan and will elevate the overall visitor experience for years to come,” she said.

The Cowichan Sportsplex has been a popular regional outdoor sports, fitness and recreation park covering more than 26 acres in the Valley since it opened in 1996.

The sports centre, which is operated by the Chesterfield Sports Society, is situated on land owned by North Cowichan, but it is widely used by many in the Cowichan Valley, and beyond.

It’s anticipated that the new field house will lead to the expansion of existing programs at the Sportsplex, and inaugurate new ones.

Rob Douglas, mayor of North Cowichan, which is a major financial contributor to the new field house, said Cowichan Sportsplex provides key athletic amenities to the community.

“This new field house will not only enhance our sports facilities, but also bring our community together in new and exciting ways,” he said.

Chris Jaycox, executive director of Cowichan Sportsplex, said the organization is very excited about the completion of the field house project.

“It will help us attract larger-scale tournaments, as well as offering a community meeting space and bathroom/change-room facilities,’’ Jaycox said.
