VIDEO: Two great shows kick off November at the Osborne Bay Pub

Lazy Mike & Carson Mallon on Friday, followed by Pretzel Logic Orchestra on Saturday

Berry Music Company has lined up a super November at the Osborne Bay Pub.

Lazy Mike and Carson Mallon are in Crofton Friday, Nov. 1, starting at 7 p.m.

There’s no cover for this show, featuring the father and son team of Lazy Mike (harmonica) and Carson Mallon (guitar).

They have been a mainstay of the Vancouver Island blues scene for more than a decade in various projects, including Lazy Mike & the Rockin’ Recliners.

Steeped in traditional early electric blues, this duo’s song selection draws from a wide range of artists, notably Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Big Bill Broonzy, Tampa Red, Johnny Young, and Jimmy Reed. They also perform several original compositions. Both of the guys sing and listening to them weave their instrumentation in this traditional roots and blues music is a treat.

What happens when you get some of Victoria’s finest jazz players, mix them with a few funky rock players and hand them the Steely Dan catalogue? A cool, cool breeze starts blowing through the room.

The Pretzel Logic Orchestra is more than just an homage offered to Steely Dan, it’s a labour of love for its nine members.

These folks have the chops it takes to interpret the complex and quirky material generated by the iconic ’70s song writing partnership of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Fusing jazz sensibility with the rhythms of rock, pop and R&B, Steely Dan created a sophisticated sound that remains unique in music history and produced some of the most memorable and timeless songs of the decade.

In such tunes as ‘Do It Again’, ‘Peg’, ‘Deacon Blues’, ‘Rikki Don’t Lose that Number’, and ‘Dirty Work’, The Pretzel Logic Orchestra’s big, cool, guitar- and horn-driven sound evokes the hip, urban culture that underpins these unforgettable songs.

The Pretzel Logic Orchestra was formed in Victoria in 2002 and has played to sold out houses during their residency at Hermann’s Jazz Club. The very best players in that city have played in the band over the years, citing the excitement of the audiences and the complex arrangements of the songs as major inducements to be involved.
