The U13C Kerry Park Islanders hoisted the Vancouver Island Amateur Hockey Association South Island Pool B banner last Sunday to cap off a season of huge strides as a team.

“They started off the year struggling to find a win,” team manager Marsha MacMaurchy commented. “In January, their momentum started to build and win after win saw them in the playoffs.”

The Islanders started the playoff tournament at Panorama Rec Centre with a 5-3 come-from-behind win over Victoria C5 in the semifinals on Saturday. Trailing 3-1 with less than five minutes left, Kerry Park dug deep and scored four goals down the stretch. Chase Landsiedel and Cooper Salvisburg finished the game with two goals, including successful penalty shots for both players, and Noah Stuart had the other.

The final was a 5-4 overtime thriller over top-seeded Juan de Fuca C1. Once again, the Islanders found themselves down 3-1, but Brayden Finlay scored to get his team back within a goal late in the second period, and Salvisburg tied the score with his second of the game with just under 12 minutes left to play. Landsiedel put Kerry Park up 4-3 with 3:34 left in regulation, but JDF made it 4-4 with 1:35 remaining. Shortly into overtime, Salvisburg completed his hat trick with the overtime winner.

Backstopping the Isles were goalies Nate MacMurchy and Jacob Champ. Liam Zwaan, Benton Smith, Kyle Kendall, Ethan Rigler, Braeden Spelman, Chase Acton, Landy Elias, Ethan Pearson, Jake Sangara, Holden Scott and Grayson Blatchford made up the rest of the team. Head coach Shane Kendall was assisted by Adam Landsiedel, Adam Salvisburg, Alex Acton and Mark Champ.
