Shawnigan Hills parkrun report for March 19

Weekly run celebrates 40th event

Thirty athletes competed in our 40th parkrun, a milestone that has taken over two and a half years to reach. In this time, we have had many supporters of the event. Brenda Niziol has promoted parkrun since the start, providing runners from CEEVACs on many occasions. This weekend had eight members of the running club competing; indeed, teammates Teresa Lewis-Schneider, Ben Marrs, and Brenda herself, were the first three to cross the finish line.

This lovely, crisp spring morning provided ideal running conditions as 11 parkrunners recorded personal best times; the standout performances being Corinne Symes, who improved by over three minutes, and Linda Zimmerman who, having completed the Comox Half Marathon the previous weekend, improved by almost two minutes.

There is an interesting battle between the two Davids in the VM70-74 category as David Dear’s 30:01 was enough to break David Pope’s 30:24 record set last November. The latter has been a marshal for the past two weeks and will have some extra motivation going into next Saturday’s run.

Walk, jog, run, volunteer or simply come and watch — it is up to you. Be a part of the community, make new friends and socialize — we meet at Shawnigan Coffee House post-run after each event. It is a great way to start the weekend.
