Shawnigan Hills parkrun report for Dec. 4

Participants brave the snow in a memorable run

Jeff Wright’s first place on his 20th run is one he will savour for a while. Scanning the field during the warm-up, he could sense that this might be his day. Event 33 was one for the die-hards only. Snow had fallen the previous evening, which warranted a course inspection an hour before the start. Luckily, Shawnigan Lake School’s excellent maintenance staff had been out clearing the snow since daybreak and the run was able to go ahead.

Although it did not register close to his fastest time due to the conditions, Jeff led from the start and finished an impressive 21 seconds ahead of second placed MacKenzie Leslie, one of two first-timers in the field of 16 athletes, along with Kristin Herle. Amazingly, we actually registered three personal best times, with in-form Carene Quigley and Michelle Laabs continuing their fine progress.

Our Christmas Day event will take place at the usual time and we encourage runners to come in fancy dress or wear a Christmas sweater. There will be prizes as well as some festive refreshments at the finish.

Walk, jog, run, volunteer or simply come and watch — it is up to you. Be a part of the community, make new friends and socialize — we meet at Shawnigan Coffee House post-run after each event. It is a great way to start the weekend.
