Ruckers get first win in Cowichan Women’s Football League

Expansion team shuts down the Law on Friday night

The expansion Ruckers earned their first win in the Cowichan Women’s Football League last Friday night.

In just their second game in the league, the Ruckers defeated the Law 24-0 on two touchdown passes by rookie quarterback Hannah Ewan and two scores by Sarah Kaljuvee, including one on a punt return. Kaljuvee also grabbed an interception, Shelley Hodgins had an interception and a touchdown, and Tyson Beukeboom and Hannah McKevitt each recorded a sack. Danielle Rankin had two sacks for the Law and Kim Scafe had an interception.

The Law were back in action on Sunday and picked up a 12-0 win over the Wild. Wendy Charles and Alyssa Burrows had the touchdowns, Rankin had four sacks and Megan Newton added one, and Jazmine Charles and Nikki Flynn grabbed interceptions. Ashley Bond had four picks for the Wild, with Shylayne Davidson, Val Chambers and Angela Potskin had one apiece.

Five different players scored touchdowns as the Crew crushed Blue Steel 40-0. Rookie Kaili Lukan was a standout for the Crew with a touchdown, two converts and two sacks. Blue Steel got two touchdowns from Megan Groenendijk and an interception from Sara Jones.

The Ravens also got touchdowns from five different players as they defeated the Storm 30-6. Megan Lee led the way with a 40-yard touchdown run, a convert and a sack. Chelsea Morton scored the Storm’s lone major on a 40-yard pick six, while Ashton Aumen and Julie Martin had interceptions.

The Junior Girls Flag Football League also got into action on Sunday with eight different teams taking the field for the first time. Split into 7-11 and 12-15 age groups, the players had a blast on their first day of games, despite the nasty weather.
