Playoffs still possible for the Cowichan Valley Capitals

Caps need two wins and some help to advance

After winning two in a row at home on Feb. 4 and Feb. 10, the Cowichan Valley Capitals have dropped their last two home games: a Feb. 18 4-1 loss to the Coquitlam Express and a Feb. 19 5-2 loss to the Powell River Kings.

Luke Lavery scored the lone goal against the Express. His 15th of the season came at 18:38 of the first period from Cole Melady and Luke Santilli. Cowichan was out-shot 40-24.

Against Powell River, Matthew Biros scored his first of the year for the Caps to give them the early lead less than five minutes into the first period. Evan Mayer and Darius Bachler earned the helpers on the play.

Cowichan didn’t score again until Biros and Bachler set up captain Ian Kern for his fourth of the year 7:12 into the second. The goal tied the game at two but that’s all they would get, as the Kings went on to score once more in the second and twice more in the third to head home with the 5-2 victory.

The Capitals have just two more regular season games left in February: the first on Feb. 24 when they play host to the Victoria Grizzlies and then the following night in Port Alberni against the Bulldogs.

Cowichan can still make the playoffs but they’ll need to win both of their final two games and get a little help from the Express and the Nanaimo Clippers who would each have to beat the Langley Rivermen in order for the Caps to advance.
