An early goal-against proved insurmountable for the Cowichan Cougars over-30 women’s soccer team in a 2-1 loss to Vic West in Victoria on Sunday afternoon.

Vic West opened the scoring in the first minute of play, capitalizing on a defensive miscue by the Cougars, then scored their second goal late in the first half from a goal-mouth scramble.

Despite their best efforts, Cowichan was unable to respond before halftime.

“The Vic West goalie made a bunch of great saves to keep us off the scoreboard in the first half,” Cowichan coach Darian Achurch said.

The Cougars kept up the pressure in the second half, earning a goal of their own from another goal-mouth scramble, slotted by Tara McCaffery.

Despite carrying the play and hitting the crossbar, the Cougars were unable to tie the score.

The Cougars will be on the road again this weekend, visiting Prospect Lake on Friday night. Cowichan’s Div. 2 women’s team had last weekend off, but will return to action this Sunday when they visit Gorge FC at Hampton Park at noon.
