Field hockey players in the Cowichan Valley have the chance next weekend to learn from some of the best in the world, including Duncan’s own Sara Goodman.
The Canadian national women’s field hockey team is hosting a camp at the Cowichan Sportsplex on Sunday, June 12, hoping to raise some money and promote their sport as the 2022 World Cup approaches.
Although the team is ranked 13th in the world and has booked a spot in the 2022 World Cup — its first World Cup appearance since 1994 — the program hasn’t received any government funding since 2015, and relies largely on donations, sponsorships and athlete fees to function.
Goodman, a product of Cowichan Field Hockey and graduate of Cowichan Secondary School, helped the team qualify for the World Cup by finishing third at the Pan American Cup tournament in Chile this past January.

The camp from 10 a.m. to noon on June 12 is open to boys and girls, ages six and up (recommended). Required equipment is a stick, shin guards, mouth guard, and goalie gear if applicable. The recommended donation is $10-12 but is not required to attend.
