It was a busy week for the Lake Cowichan Kraken junior B hockey team both on and off the ice last week.

On Oct. 12 the Kraken acquired the playing rights to goaltender Aaron Kaner in exchange for future considerations.

Kaner made an immediate impact, backstopping his new team to their 6-5 win over Comox on Oct. 21.

The day after their Oct. 23 6-3 loss to Saanich, the Kraken visited Palsson Elementary school for The Drop Everything and Read Challenge.

Much to the students’ delight, the players took the time to read with them.

Then, on Oct. 27, the Kraken faced off against the Nanaimo Buccaneers at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. It was the third time the two teams have met this season but the first time Lake Cowichan came away without the victory.

The Kraken fell by a 3-1 score with Rowan Zapisocki earning the only Lake Cowichan goal at 13:42 of the third period. Zapisocki’s fourth of the season was assisted by Jacob Campbell and Anthony Wilson.

Goaltender Brendan Wilson took the loss in net for the Kraken, saving 24 of 27 shots.

To end their October schedule, the Kraken hosted the Campbell River Storm on Sunday, Oct. 30 at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

Newly acquired goalie Kaner got the start against the Storm, stopping 20 of 25 shots in a 5-2 loss.

Scoring for the Kraken were Michell Billings from Ayden Baldo and Sukhraj Narwal from Brayden Ganter.

Islanders shuffle roster

In other Junior B hockey transactions affecting area teams, on Oct. 13, the Kerry Park Islanders picked up forward Bruce Burnett from the 100 Mile House Wranglers in exchange for forward Carter Sachs.

The following day, the Isles acquired the playing rights to forward David Coyle from the North Vancouver Wolf Pack in exchange for the playing rights to defenceman Jonathon Soares. On Oct. 27, the Isles then released Coyle’s rights to the Revelstoke Grizzlies for future considerations.

Kerry Park fell to 4-3 the Peninsula Panthers on Friday, Oct. 28 but wrapped October up with a victory, beating the Port Alberni Bombers 5-1 in a penalty-filled affair at Kerry Park Arena the following evening.

Scoring for the Islanders were Carson Brown, Nathan Bouveur, Carson, Strom, and Aleko Sdrakas (2). Assists were collected by Sdrakas, Nathan DaSilva, Jack Strom, Brown, Kellan Bates and Boltakke.

Goaltender Eric Young got the win for the Isles stopping 43 of 44 shots.
