It was two wins in the last three games combined for the Cowichan Valley’s two junior B hockey teams.
The Kerry Park Islanders had a chance to turn the tables on the Peninsula Panthers Tuesday evening, Dec. 13, in a rematch with the team that beat them in overtime Dec. 2.
They did just that, winning 5-4, again in extra time.
In a total team effort, goals came from five different Islanders: Bryce Burnett, Noah Hovde, Keaton McLean, Colby Robinson, and Aleko Sdrakas with the game winner in overtime.
Two games on the road resulted in two different outcomes for the Lake Cowichan Kraken last week.
Aiden Eddy had the hot stick, scoring once on Dec. 8 in Victoria and twice more the following evening when the Kraken visited the league’s cellar-dwelling Nanaimo Buccaneers.
In Nanaimo, Eddy scored in the first and second periods and Sukhraj Narwal also got a goal in the second period, but the Buccaneers scored one more to enter the second intermission clinging to a one-goal lead.
Lake Cowichan struck three times in the third period however, with goals from Gavin Mastrodonato and Anthony Wilson as well as defenceman Brayden Ganter’s first of the year to seal the deal and give the Kraken a 6-3 victory come the final whistle.
It was a much better result than the night before when the Kraken fell in overtime to the mighty Victoria Cougars.
Goals by Eddy, Kyler Smith and Rylan Hildebrand propelled the Kraken to a 3-0 first period lead over Victoria but it didn’t last against the South Division leaders at Archie Browning Arena.
A Victoria goal in the second period and two more from the home team in the third sent the game into overtime, with Victoria scoring the game-winning-goal 4:14 into the extra frame to steal the win.
On Dec. 14, the Kraken visited Oceanside and the Islanders were on the road to Westshore, but the results were not available by the Citizen’s press time.
Lake Cowichan wraps up their 2022 schedule with home games against Comox Valley and Saanich on Dec. 16 (7:30 p.m. puck drop) and Dec. 18 (5:30 p.m. puck drop) respectively.
Kerry Park finishes the year on Dec. 17 at home against Campbell River. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
