Teams representing the present and past of University of Victoria Vikes field hockey, both featuring talent from the Cowichan Valley, battled for first place at the Field Hockey BC senior indoor championships at the Cowichan Community Centre on the first weekend of February.
The current UVic team, including Cowichan products Robin Fleming, Stefanie Langkammer and Ashton Aumen, prevailed over the Vikes Alumni, which also included local players, in the gold-medal game. The Wildcats beat the Black Dinos — one of two teams from the University of Calgary — for bronze.
The Red Dinos were fifth, followed by UBC, the Valley Vixens and Prime Time — a team made up mostly of over-45 players who used the tournament as a training opportunity before travelling to Hong Kong for the World Masters Indoor Tournament.
A week earlier, the Cowichan Typhoons claimed silver in the eighth annual Malcolm Fernandes U18 Indoor Tournament, after battling the Wildcats in the championship game. The younger Cowichan Tsunami team also competed in the tournament, as did a team from Shawnigan Lake School.
