It was in convincing fashion that the Cowichan Farm Store Fury picked up their first win of the Div. 3A men’s soccer season on Saturday afternoon.

Playing in their fifth game of the season, the Fury prevailed 6-1 over struggling FC Sagres at the Sherman Road turf, making use of some changes to the game plan initiated by coach Will Chaster.

“Last week, I noticed that if we could make some small adjustments the result would be more positive for us,” Chaster said.

A fast start by the Fury led to a penalty-kick goal by Ole MacKay. Sagres responded with a counter-press that resulted in a penalty kick of their own, and the teams were deadlocked at 1-1.

Cowichan regained control after that and quickly showed themselves to be the superior squad, dominating possession and setting team highs for passes completed. Around the 30-minute mark, the Fury went ahead for good on MacKay’s second goal of the afternoon.

Sagres redoubled their efforts in the second half, but the Fury refused to let them get back in the game, and MacKay continued to set the pace, tipping the ball past the defender on Cowichan’s side of centre and breaking in to the left of the Sagres net before nailing the bottom right corner for his third goal of the game.

“It took about 20 minutes for us, on Ole’s hat-trick goal, to send a clear message that this was our home and we are not settling for anything less than a win today,” Fury head coach Will Chaster said.

About five minutes after that, Shermag Joseph took a breakaway pass on the left side and picked the same corner as MacKay. Elvis Asengi then put on a show with two goals in a span of two minutes, the second an impressive bit of footwork from the top of the box to complete a give-and-go.

Averaging two injuries a game, the Fury still had 14 players ready to go on Saturday, bolstering their numbers by calling up Miles Boulton from the U21 Mid Isle Mariners.
