With a new name and new kit, and playing in a new division, the Cowichan Farm Store Fury got off to a quick start in their Vancouver Island Soccer League season opener on Saturday and look poised to contend.
Promoted to Div. 3 after a strong showing in their first season together, the Fury — formerly known as Cowichan Red Arrow — kicked off their second campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Campbell River Cermaq Golden Wings at the Sherman Road turf.
Jonas Golf-Myers opened the scoring inside the first five minutes, and Cowichan held Campbell River off through the remainder of regulation time. It wasn’t until stoppage time that the Fury were able to answer back.
“It was a very physical contest,” Cowichan head coach Will Chaster said. “We learned two things: one, we can match up to the contact, and two, our speed and skill should keep us in games.”
The Fury took a full 19-player roster into the match, and everyone managed to get some time. Representatives from the team’s new title sponsors, the Community Farm Store, were on hand for the opening match.
The club was back in action on Tuesday night, taking on the Div. 1 Mid Isle Mariners in a McGavin Cup match on the Keserich grass field. The team will play its next Div. 3 match Saturday at 4 p.m., at home against Saanich Fusion.
