The BC Senior Indoor Field Hockey championship was held Feb. 4-5 at the Cowichan Community Centre.
The tournament featured eight teams, including the Cowichan Valley Vixens, who played to a second-place finish in the event.
While the silver medal was great, “the best part about the tournament is that it’s held in Cowichan and is full of Cowichan players throughout all the different teams, and we have great support from the community,” said Cowichan player/manager Beth Corish.
That support helped Cowichan to success throughout the event.
“We happily placed first in our pool and played for first in the final against UVic who were the ultimate tournament champions.”
In their first game, the Valley Vixens beat Wildcats White 4-1.
Alison Fraser, Kristie Sykes, Amanda Burns and Corish all scored for Cowichan.
In their second came, Cowichan exploded with seven goals to beat Furious Tango 7-2.
Burns, Fraser, Sykes, and Stefanie Langkhammer all scored singles while Diana Larson earned the hattrick with two field goals and a penalty stroke.
It wasn’t all victories, however, as Cowichan faced the UBC Thunderbirds in their third game of pool play.
Sykes and Larson scored for the Vixens but that was it as UBC doubled the home team 4-2.
Their two wins and one loss in pool play sent them to the final against the UVic Vikes with the Vikes prevailing by a 7-1 score.
Langkhammer scored Cowichan’s lone goal in the silver medal finish.
“We had a team of all home-grown Cowichan players which was amazing, including all very competitive players who have played at university, provincial and national levels,” Corish noted. “I think I could speak for all the players saying that we were all happy to get back to the indoor tournament after the COVID hiatus, and were impressed with ourselves with how well we did.”
