Another tournament, another good showing from Cowichan Valley area wrestlers.

“Our wrestlers showed great determination, grit and fortitude throughout all of their matches,” said head coach Nick Zuback, of those who competed at the Campbell River Invitational tournament at Carihi Secondary School recently.

The tournament saw 150 wrestlers compete.

Leading the way for Cowichan Valley athletes was Leon Tsuboi from QMS. He wrestled to gold in the 45kg junior boys class.

“Leon has continued to improve in every match that he has wrestled in and he has set his sights at winning provincial gold this year,” Zuback said.

Cowichan wrestlers earned eight silver medals over the course of the weekend.

Taking home silver medals were Loryn Roberts, Rui Wang, Rose Wu, Georgia Armstrong and Jacob Meiner all from QMS, as well as Gabe Carreiro and Ronny Carreiro from Francis Kelsey, and Elijah Cote from NCS.

Bronze medal winners were Savannah Screaton and Matin Taghi from QMS and Rory Brennan-McCann who represents Shawnigan Lake School.

Finishing just out of the medals but wrestling to fourth place finishes were Cowichan’s Cameron Healey, QMS’s Jake Armstrong, Andrew Bahen, and Jordan He, as well as Francis Kelesy’s Nate Garstang.

In the overall team placings, QMS finished second out of 22 schools in the senior girls division and ninth in the senior boys division, followed by Francis Kelsey at 13th, Shawnigan at 14th, and Cowichan at 15th place in the senior boys division.

In the junior girls division, QMS took sixth place overall while in the junior boys division, QMS finished fourth overall while Francis Kelsey finished sixth and Quamichan was 14th.

Next up for the Cowichan wrestlers was the Western Canada Age Class where they competed against the best in Western Canada and for a spot to compete at the National Championships in March.

The results of that event will be available next edition.
