Phoenix Skailes earned a spot on Team BC and fellow provincial champion Joaquim Dalton-Pereira was named an alternate as five athletes from the Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club travelled to North Vancouver late last month to compete at the Canada Summer Games trials.

“All of our wrestlers represented our Valley extremely well as they wrestled for a spot on the team,” CVWC head coach Nick Zuback said.

The 2022 Canada Summer Games will take place in the Niagara Region of Ontario in August.

Skailes, from Queen Margaret’s School, was provincial champ in the 90kg girls division in February, and Dalton-Pereira, from Duncan Christian School won the 48kg boys title.

Also representing the CVWC at the Canada Summer Games were Carter Zuback of Queen of Angels School, who placed third in the 52kg class, and DCS duo Aiden Dyer-Price and Darren Doherty, who placed fifth in their respective weight classes.

The CVWC will be sending a small contingent to the Miri Piri Invitational in Abbotsford on May 7 and another team to the national championships in Calgary in June.

To help the team train for nationals, the club needs to buy a new mat worth $15,000. To fund that purchase, the club is offering opportunities for sponsors to buy ad space on the mat that will be visible at practices locally and tournaments all over the Island, Mainland and beyond for the mat’s 15-year lifespan. Anyone interested in sponsoring the mat should contact Zuback at 250-815-0959 or nzuback@hotmail.com
