Cowichan Valley Mustangs collect league pennant

Mustangs go into provincials as top seed

The Cowichan Valley Mustangs will carry the league pennant into the BC Minor Baseball midget AAA provincial championships.

The Mustangs wrapped up the season in the last weekend of July with a record of 33-5, then had to wait for the North Fraser Nationals to close out their season this past weekend.

The Mustangs needed the Nationals to lose one of their last two games against the North Island Cubs on Sunday, and the finish was as dramatic as it could have been. North Fraser won the first game on Sunday 4-1, but North Island came back to prevail 3-0 in the second game.

Had North Fraser swept on Sunday, the Mustangs and Nationals would have finished the season with identical 33-5 records. The teams split their season series, but the Nationals held the tiebreaker, which was runs-against in the head-to-head games. Fortunately for the Mustangs, the Cubs stepped in to play the spoiler.

Cowichan and North Fraser will headline their respective pools at the provincial championships, which begin at Lambrick Park in Victoria this Thursday.
