Golf pros across B.C. are taking on ALS this month by golfing as many holes as they can in a single day, and two local courses are in the mix.

Arbutus Ridge pros Andrew Hajer and Jayme Young will take part in the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS on Thursday, June 13, and Norm Jackson and G.P. Denomme of the Cowichan Golf Club will hit the links on Friday, June 14.

“We’ll be out there at the crack of dawn, golfing as much as we can, sprinting across the course,” said Denomme, who isn’t a pro but has been effected deeply by ALS and has taken part in the Golfathon before.

The Golfathon will transition later that day into a fun tournament, also in support of ALS, with a shotgun start at 3:30 p.m.

“There will be a whole lot of golfing that day,” Denomme said.

Denomme’s dad died from ALS in 2006, when Denomme was just 12 years old. He did the Golfathon in subsequent years, and got back into fundraising recently. He is also the coordinator for the Mid-Island ALS Walk, which takes place in Parksville this Sunday.

“I’m glad to be back and doing as much as I can to help individuals and families effected,” Denomme stated.

Sixty per cent of the funds raised goes toward patient care, and 40 per cent goes toward research and development.

“It’s all in the name of bridging the gap for what people can afford on their own and what they need to live their life comfortably,” Denomme said. “That’s what we’re trying to achieve.”
