Victoria’s William Bishop shot eight-under over three rounds to win the 2020 B.C. Juvenile Boys Championship at Cowichan Golf Club last Tuesday through Thursday, but contenders from the Cowichan Valley weren’t far behind him.

Bishop, who plays out of the Victoria Golf Club, shot 69-66-67 to edge out North Vancouver’s Niklas Jaakola of Seymour Golf & Country Club by four shots and Langley’s Danny Im of The Redwoods by nine shots.

Tied for third were Parksville’s Gavyn Knight, a Brentwood College School student who golfs out of Pheasant Glen and Vernon’s Ryan West of Predator Ridge, who both shot 215 over three days. Knight tied Bishop with a round of 66 on the second day of the championship, scoring five birdies that day, including three in a row on holes 8, 9 and 10.

Both competitors from the Cowichan Valley made the cut after two rounds and finished in the top 20. Cobble Hill’s Lucas Kulai of Arbutus Ridge overcame a round of 81 on the first day to post the fifth-best score of 69 in round two and tie for the fourth-best score of 71 in round three. He finished tied for 12th with an overall score of 221. Shawnigan Lake’s Adam Hyde-Lay, also of Arbutus Ridge, shot 72 in the first round, the ninth best score of that day, and finished tied for 17th at 223.

The B.C. Juvenile and Junior Girls championships were also held at Cowichan over the same three days, with the same top three golfers in both. Surrey’s Angela Arora of Beach Grove shot 213 to edge Burnaby’s Luna Lu of Pitt Meadows (214) and Vancouver’s Michelle Liu of Shaughnessy (215).

The B.C. bantam and novice championships took place this Tuesday and Wednesday at Mount Brenton in Chemainus. Mill Bay’s Zachary Grisdale of Cowichan Golf Course and Cowichan Bay’s Sophia Mackenzie of Arbutus Ridge were entered in the boys and girls novice events, respectively.
