The Cowichan Piggies closed out the senior men’s rugby season with a tough test against Burnaby Lake RC in Burnaby on April 9.
The Piggies made the trip over with 15 players, then lost one to a broken shoulder less than three minutes into the match. The teams played 13-a-side in the second half, but it was too late for the Piggies, who went down to a 75-0 loss to the playoff-bound Burnaby team.
“Not the best way to finish a season,” Cowichan head coach Andrew Wright admitted. “Our boys tackled hard, but they had a full team.”
Wright said he had “mixed emotions” about the season as a whole, which saw the Piggies win the Island First Division in the fall, then go 2-6 in the spring, when they had to compete against clubs that field Premiership teams as well.
“It was still a fun season,” said Wright. “We will use it as something to build on.”
Cowichan’s women’s team will begin the First Division playoffs this Saturday with a home date against Scribes at 12:45 p.m.
