The Cowichan Piggies’ final home game of the men’s First Division rugby season had a similar scoreline to some of the club’s results from earlier in the spring, but this time, the Piggies were on the opposite side.
Playing some of the First Division powers early on in the campaign, the Piggies suffered some lopsided losses. Last Saturday, against the Vancouver Rowing Club, a team at the same end of the table as themselves, Cowichan ran to a 75-7 victory.
“We had to be humble about it,” Cowichan head coach Andrew Wright commented. “We’ve been on the other end of that too many times this spring.”
The teams came to the pitch evenly matched in terms of numbers, but the Piggies got off to a strong start on back-to-back tries by Darren Parcells, and the Rowers just couldn’t slow them down.
Ty Benson and Bruce Moss also scored twice, and Griffin Diaczuk, Amish Dobson, Owen Wood and TJ Williams had one try apiece. Wood kicked for the other points.
The Rowers’ lone try came on the final play of the match.
“It was pretty electric rugby,” Wright said. “It was a good way to close out the season at home.”
Both the Cowichan men and women will head to Burnaby this weekend for their final league regular-season matches. While the men’s team will miss the playoffs this year, the women are guaranteed a top-three seed, and will have home-field advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs.
