Volleyball players got back on the grass on Aug. 21 for their first outdoor event in the Cowichan Valley since Canada Day 2019.
Cowichan Outdoor Volleyball hosted the Welcome Back Tournament at the Cowichan Sportsplex, bringing together teams in two different divisions after more than two years on the sidelines.
The 4-on-4 Intermediate Division was won by OG Flex Crew (Harj Sangha, Lau VanWingerden, Josh, Buczek, Savanah Campbell, Airus Martinez), followed by Smash or Pass (Ben Kapteyn, Jaymie Brandsma, Vincent Fernandez, Jade Cobides) in second place, and Wall Fam (Malachi Wall, Ezra Wall, Zane Wall, Michaela Wall) in third.
The 3-on-3 Competitive Division was won by Shank You (Doug Groenendijk, Danielle Groenendijk, Jon Climie), with Too Short (Paul Bohemier, Tiara Hobbs, Channa Khan) in second and Empire Spikes Back (Darian Achurch, Joeleen Achurch, Dave Stewart, Mike Minckler) in third.
“A fun time was had by all and our league sponsors provided us with great prizes at a great venue,” said Darian Achurch, who organized the tournament.
