After some of their top players helped Vancouver Island Soccer League teams to a strong showing in all-star competitions in Port Moody last weekend, Cowichan’s senior men’s soccer squads will all be in action at home this weekend.

George Thomas of the Cowichan 49ers was named Man of the Match in the masters all-star game, which the VISL team lost 3-2 on penalty kicks to the Fraser Valley Soccer League all-stars.

A late goal by the VISL team tied the score at 2-2 at the end of 90 minutes, but the FVSL team scored five penalty goals to the VISL’s four. In addition to Thomas, Cowichan’s Stu Barker, Adam Taft, Neall Rowlings, Todd Vass and goalie Rob McIntyre were also named to the Island masters all-star team, with Kevin James as a co-coach.

Cowichan LMG’s Steve Scott helped the VISL Div. 1 all-stars lock down a 3-0 victory over the FVSL Premier all-stars.

The VISL took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Scott was inserted into the game in the second half as the Fraser Valley team pressed, and the veteran set up the Island team’s third goal by Vic West youngster Nicholas Budisa.

Following the matches, both leagues chipped in to donate $1,500 to Kevin James’s MS Kick for the Cure charity. James’s wife, Darcie, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis several years ago, and the couple has done extensive work to raise money and awareness for MS.

The 49ers will be in action on the Sherman Road turf this Friday at 7:30 p.m., with a key battle against UVic Alumni, who are chasing Cowichan for first place in the masters A division.

A busy slate the next day will start at 4 p.m. when third-place Cowichan LMG hosts a Div. 1 match against the second-place Mid Isle Mariners, followed at 6 p.m. by a Div. 4 battle between first-place Cowichan Red Arrow and SFFC Squadron, and finally at 8 p.m. by a masters B test between the Cowichan Steelheads and Castaways Juniors.

On Sunday, U21 Cowichan United will play host to Lakehill at 2:15 p.m.
