Cowichan LMG wants to put loss behind them

Not much to take away from 4-1 defeat

Cowichan LMG is looking to wipe the slate clean after a 4-1 loss to Vic West in Div. 1 men’s soccer action at the Sherman Road turf on Friday night.

There weren’t even a lot of lessons to learn from the disappointing match, so coach Ryan Flynn just wants to move on.

“I guess the biggest thing is if we face them in cup play, we’ll know what to expect,” he said. “They played their best and we didn’t play our best. They don’t know what our best looks like.”

Vic West opened the scoring in the 16th minute, but Cowichan captain Colin Knight replied 10 minutes later. Victoria regained the lead for good in the 45th minute, then added two more goals in the second half.

Flynn liked the way his team played in the first half, but could have done without the second.

“[Vic West] are a good team,” he said. “They got the best of us in that one. They’re an experienced team. We’re still learning how to play together and be consistent.”

Emotions got the best of some of the Cowichan players down the stretch, and there were several cards handed out, including three red cards to Cowichan players and one to a Cowichan coach.

Red cards were issued in the 79th minute to Blaze Roberts, and in the 90th minute to Jordan Korven, Jordan De Graaf and coach Curtis Flynn.

The team will refocus this weekend for back-to-back games against Div. 1-leading Lakehill. The teams will square off at Braefoot Park on Friday, and again at Keserich Field on Sunday at 2:15 p.m.

In Div. 4, the Cowichan Fury lost 2-1 to the Prospect Lake Lakers at Layritz Turf last Friday night, their lone goal coming from Sabur Abdulai. The Fury will play host to Castaways Invicta this Saturday at 6 p.m. on the Sherman Road turf.

Div. 3 Cowichan Oak FC picked up an easy three points when Castaways forfeited last Saturday. The Oak will open cup play at home this Friday against Lakehill Ekta on the Sherman Road turf at 7:30 p.m., then visit Lakehill Hooligans on Sunday.
