The Lake Cowichan pickleball courts on Cowichan Avenue will be busy this coming weekend.

The Cowichan Lake Pickleball Club is holding its first invitational tournament this Friday to Sunday (July 26-28), something the club plans to make an annual event.

The club ran the Island championships last summer, and expects to build on that success.

“Based on last year, when we hosted the Vancouver Island Pickleball Association Championships, we know this will draw participants from other towns, many of whom linger to enjoy our lake, river, and either hiking or camping,” club spokesperson Bee Greenway said.

The women’s and men’s singles will start on Friday at 2:30 p.m.

Women’s doubles will start on Saturday, followed by men’s doubles at 1 p.m.

Mixed doubles is scheduled for Sunday at 9 a.m.

“We have a fine mix of local and out-of-town players, and the caliber of play will be excellent,” Greenway commented. “It’s a great spectator sport, and there will be ample bleachers, so we are hoping for a good turnout of folks to cheer on the players.”
