The Cowichan Farm Store Fury played to a 1-1 draw with Vic West Casuals in their Vancouver Island Soccer League Div. 3 opener at the Sherman Road turf on Saturday afternoon.

The Fury got off to an excellent start, and took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute after Sam Smith sent a free kick in from just over centre to the back post where it was headed in by Connor Crichton.

“We had a lot of the play early in the game and controlled the ball for long stretches,” head coach Will Chaster commented. “We gave up a couple chances, but our defence was tracking back well.”

Vic West tied the score in the 66th minute, and came on strong as the game went on. Cowichan held on, with keeper Tim den Hartigh stopping one penalty kick and watching another roll harmlessly past the post.

“With the roster changes this year and the limited practice time so far I was really satisfied with the result,” Chaster said, adding that assistant coach Jonas Golf-Myers executed a very good game plan.

The Fury will take to the road this weekend, visiting Lakehill Hooligans at Braefoot Park on Sunday afternoon.

Also in Div. 3, Quw’utsun FC will make their season debut this Sunday, hosting Vic West Wanderers at the Si’em Lelum field at 2 p.m.
