The Cowichan Cougars advanced to the Stephanie Shergold Cup final with a 4-2 win over Gorge’s Div. 2 team at Hampton Park on Sunday afternoon.

Cowichan’s O30 women’s team started the game strong, creating multiple scoring chances that kept the Gorge keeper on her toes. They finally broke through in the 20th minute when Stacey de Lusignan converted a penalty kick after a Gorge defender was called for a hand ball.

That lead was short-lived, however, as Gorge replied six minutes later with a strong shot to the top corner. De Lusignan delivered on a breakaway five minutes later to put the Cougars back in front, and Tonya Kilmer appeared to make it 3-1 for Cowichan shortly after that, but her goal was disallowed.

“The ball was just bouncing around in the box after our corner and I popped it in,” Kilmer commented. “The ref didn’t explain why it don’t count so I am glad it wasn’t the deciding factor in the game.”

Jenna Waddy continued the scoring parade with her own breakaway goal in the 36th minute, and the Cougars took a two-goal lead into halftime.

Gorge came back out refusing to give up, and managed to cut the lead to a single goal before Monni Savory stepped up to restore Cowichan’s two-goal lead and secure a spot in the cup final.

“It was a great team win again with all players contributing,” noted coach Darian Achurch. “We will need all our players again for the Shergold Cup final.”

The Cougars will face Castaways United, the only team that has defeated them this year, for the Stephanie Shergold Cup title on Sunday, March 27 at 1 p.m. at Langford’s Starlight Stadium.
