The Cowichan Valley Capitals dropped two straight last weekend in Powell River against the Kings but the future looks bright based on the play of affiliate call-ups players (AP).

On Friday, March 17 in the first of games on back-to-back nights, the Caps had plenty of scoring, but the Kings did too in a contest that saw 14 goals tallied overall.

Oliver Salo kicked it off in the first period, converting a Cole Melady pass to put the visitors up 1-0. The lead was erased roughly six minutes later with a Powell River goal, and then the Kings scored again to take a 2-1 lead into the break.

Two more goals from Powell River put the Caps down by three midway through the middle frame but Luke Lavery took AP player Matthew Wise’s pass and put it in the back of the net to cut the lead to two.

The second period proved to be a scoring bonanza with the Kings adding two more before AP player Kent Moors scored his first for the Caps from Matthew Biros.

The Kings took a 6-3 lead into the third period and scored twice more before Lavery potted his second of the game.

With the score 7-4, each team went on to score one more goal, Cowichan’s coming off the stick of Luke Eurig from Ethan Dekay and AP player Adam Bourgeois.

AP goalie Jesse Pye stopped 38 of 47 shots in goal for the Caps.

The following evening featured just nine goals in what would have been considered a high-scoring game had 14 not been tallied the night before.

The Kings got out to 3-0 lead but a powerplay marker late in the second period by Quin Disher from Dekay and Eurig got the Caps in the board.

Cowichan battled hard in the third with goals from Logan Camp (from Melady), Disher, and Lavery, in the sixth, seventh and eighth minutes respectively pulling the Caps ahead by one.

Their comeback was thwarted by a short-handed goal from the Kings with just over three minutes left to play. The tying goal sent the game to overtime where Powell River went on to score and take the game 5-4.

Lukas Renaud took the loss in goal, stopping 29 of 34 shots.

The Caps have three games left in their regular season, all on the road. They play in Coquitlam on March 24, Chilliwack on March 25 and Surrey on March 26.
