Oh what a relief it was for the Cowichan midget Bulldogs to face a team other than Comox.

“The last three games we played were against Comox,” explained head coach Tim Maertz. “It was like going to school knowing that you were going to get picked on by that one guy at school. Just not wanting to play.”

The team’s morale was low, but it picked up when they realized it wasn’t Comox on their schedule this weekend, but the White Rock Titans.

“The guys were really looking forward to this week’s game,” Maertz said.

The Titans got on the board early, scoring just six plays into the game.

“It was not the start we wanted obviously, but as the game progressed our players got more and more gritty,” Maertz said.

The Titans scored just five plays into their second offensive drive giving themselves a 14-0 lead.

“On the ensuing kick return, Trey McCuaig-Jones, starting on our own five yard line, ran 55 yards to get us into great field position to start our next offensive drive,” Maertz said.

But the Bulldogs were unable to get anywhere, and turned it over after an incomplete pass on third down.

The Bulldogs stood strong in the second quarter, thanks to some big stops from Connor Harper, McCuaig-Jones, and Dayton Carson.

“We really needed a stop, and it gave our guys a big boost in confidence,” Maertz said. But the Titans kept coming, ultimately scoring 42 points on the day to Cowichan’s six.

Cowichan scored after a pass to Cole Davis got them a first down to set up a short run for Logan Laver. The Bulldogs got on the score board with a 10-yard pass and catch to Ben Wilson who then ran 35 yards for the major.

They didn’t convert the touchdown and the final ended 42-6.

“Trey had a great game with eight tackles, and five carries for 32 yards, and a 55-yard kick return,” Maertz said.

Harper had five and a half tackles. Laver had nine carries for 50 yards rushing. Ryder Maertz had four and a half tackles, and four carries for 29 yards rushing. Wilson had four and a half tackles, and one catch for a 45-yard TD.

The Bulldogs have secured a place in the playoffs, and will be playing the North Surrey Panthers this coming weekend in Surrey.

“This was a bittersweet game for six of our players,” Maertz said. “This was their last home game as a Cowichan Bulldog. They are aging out of the community football program.”

Those players include: #4 Tytan Carson, #5 Treyton McCuaig-Jones, #54 Cody Buckman, #63 Joe Swift, #76 Hunter Maertz and #79 Shammie Mahon.
