Six athletes from the Cowichan Climbing Academy took part in the Western Regionals in Victoria on Dec. 14 and 15.

Danica Wilson, Kaitlyn Arrowsmith, Geoff Arrowsmith, Keiran Klettke, Nicolas Goble and Dominic Fagan all earned their berths at Western Regionals through the bouldering provincials in Surrey earlier in the fall. Also in competition at provincials in Surrey was Tyla Fraser.

The climbers in Victoria were competing for opportunities to attend the Canadian national championships in Ottawa on Jan. 11 and 12.

The athletes are among many elite performers from the academy, coordinator James Doyle noted.

“All of these athletes train out of the Cowichan Climbing Academy through an SD79 school program that sees them in the gym every day training for not only athletic success but school credits towards graduation,” he said.

The climbing gym at École Mount Prevost is also open to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays from 4-6:30 p.m. for a fee of $5, which helps support climbing programs. For more information, follow the Cowichan Climbing Academy on Facebook and Instagram.
